Good Afternoon all,

Some very important updates here:

1. Cancellation of AMBience 7

AMBience 7 on the 29th May has been cancelled. This decision has been reached by the management and the conductors as the school is not allowing the sec 4s to play for the concert. Due to manpower shortage and succession problems, the main band will be unable to play for AMBience 7. The tentative plan is to hold official AMBience concert and 40th anniversary celebrations at the end of the year, if the band is not going overseas.

2. Full Alumni Concert

As the 29th May VCH slot has been booked and deposit has been paid, it will mean full forfeiture of $1800 (paid by the Alumni seniors not the school) if we do not use the slot. Therefore, the Alumni Band will make use of the slot and replace AMBience 7 with our first full Alumni concert. Mr. Lim has given the name to the concert 'bandersonics', which has the words 'band', 'anderson' and 'sonics' (meaning sound). It will be bandersonics'09 this year.

3. Repertoire

After discussions with Mr. Lim, the full repertoire has been selected. This is keeping in mind the fact that we only have May practices. Repertoire as follows:

In April, practices will remain as 1-4pm.
In May, practices are tentatively confirmed to be from 9am to 3pm.

There are only 4 practices tentatively and only one first Alumni concert, so we hope alumnus can really give us the month of May and work this last stretch together.

Please do not think that there's someone else who can help/play, but be proactive and do your part. I sincerely seek your cooperation.

Good Afternoon,

Alumni Band Practices will be in the Afternoon for the month of Mar, from 1pm to 4pm, from this Saturday onwards.

I wish to take this opportunity to urge all alumnus to return and play with us, because this afternoon pracs were not made available that easily. Arrangements have to be made to cater to those who have Morning CCA / work / committments.
The reason why practices are in the afternoon for only the month of March, is because the school wishes to know if it is feasible/time & money worthy to have the school open on an afternoon for us.

I repeat, if attendance is low, practices might jump back to the morning session, and we will suffer a greater loss of players.

So I appeal to all, pls. Please return to play with us, for just this 3 hours.
Main Band will be having practices in the morning, so there is no worry about Mr. Lim coming late. Practices will commence on time as far as possible.

Good Afternoon all,

AMBience 7 is on 29 May, both Mr Yea & Mr Lim have emphasized that this is an Alumni concert. From e low turnout, I believe it imperative to appeal to all on coming back to play with us. My Exco have paid the hefty sum to book VCH as we believe alumnus still have AMB in our heart.

This concert is for the Alumni & it is not abt having enough players but abt fulfilling a dream after many years of continued hard work. AMBience is an annual event when we can get together and make music like e happy yesteryears.

I understand that we might have our own busy schedules and commitments, but i sincerely hope that we don’t miss this year especially when this is an Alumni concert & the 40th Anniversary of AMB. It is not how there is always someone else who can play; lets throw that thinking away.

Mar's practices will be in the afternoon to accommodate ppl who have CCA in the morning. As for Uni students, we understand exams will end in Apr. This will give us at least 5 pracs bebfore the concert.

I want alumnus to understand that it is ok if you are only able to join us for a few practices, because even joining the last few practices will suffice.

Lastly, I hope AMB was never a chore to you and us but a place we proudly call our own. I hope even after years of graduation, be it on stage on in the audience, we are still proud of this band, of how she has nurtured and given us some much joy.

There will be NO Alumni practice this coming Saturday, as the Main Band will be using the instruments.

They will be having a sound check at Singapore Conference Hall and will report at school at 8.30am. Their time slot is from 10.30 onwards.

After the soundcheck, they will proceed to Yuying Secondary School (Near Kovan) for a music exchange. Alumni members are encouraged to help out for the event as they require people to help them record and take photos of their band setup.

The following are some pointers that the library officers of the Alumni would like you to know:

To convenience accounting, Alumni members are not allowed to borrow any library score or files home.
In the event that members require personal copies, members can order a set from the library latest by Wednesday, of which they will receive it on the Saturday of the same week.
Members are allowed to collect the scores personally on week days in Anderson if needed, but notification in advance is appreciated.
Photocopying of scores is at 5cents per page.
Files are not allowed to be accessed without prior consent from the library officers. If need be, members can approach lydia from the Main Band on weekdays.
Feel free to appraoach any library officers if there are not enough scores for the section.

AMBience VII Update

Good Morning all,

AMBience VII will be on the 29th May 2009 Friday at 7.30pm. Venue will be the Victoria Concert Hall.

As 2009 will be a SYF year for the Main Band, the conductors/teachers have decided that the emphasis of AMBience 7 will be on the Alumni Band.
This would mean that the roles between the Main Band and the Alumni Band will be switched. Alumni Band will be fully in charge of planning and organising concert, will have more pieces in concert and Main Band will be on a 'supporting role', playing 3 pieces only.

However, this will also mean that the cost of booking VCH will fall on the Alumni.
Question: Why would we want to foot this bill?
In previous AMBience concerts, the Alumni has always played a supporting role in concert but has never received any share of the revenue from concert, since the school is the one managing the funds. However, in this case where the Alumni Band will control fund management, a considerable amount of the revenue will go to Alumni Band (minus off booking fees, miscellaneous fees). We hope you realise funds are crucial to the growth and survival of the Alumni. Ultimately, we want our members not to be paying for every bill that comes along, like in AMBience 6, the paying for the video, for the ticket printing and all.

As such, we require members to come up with sums of money to help finance the current VCH booking fee (S$1800)
We advise the following:

On personal basis, if you are able to come up with at least $50 (round numbers appreciated) and above, we appreciate that you can come forth and LOAN this money to the Alumni fund first.
Members who are younger, can form internal groups on their own accord and come up with a sum of money, again round numbers appreciated. End day, we will pass the money back to the group leader and settle the loan internally. This is to avoid micro management of funds.

Important point to note: This is a Loan to the Alumni, NOT a donation. Loans which will be properly documentated and recorded, will be repaid using the revenue generated in AMBience 7.

Please inform me/Amanda/Gary if you wish to make a loan and help us gather the fund for VCH.

Updates on the 'Together' Concert:

1) There are issues with the level of participation that the Alumni Band can provide. Most of the key players will be involved in prep for exams or the starting of Uni.
2) Mr. yea prefers that the Alumni not be involved as the objective of the 'Together' Concert is different from that of AMBience. Emphasis should be given to that of recruits joining the Main Band, a sign of maturity and acceptance into the Main Band. Alumnus are preferred to provide logistics support instead. However, this requires further direction and clarification from Mr. lim. This would also explain why no practices are carried out yet.

There will be alumni band practice on coming saturday, 3rd May.
I believe most of the Uni people and JC people would have finished their committments and exams already. So do come for practice as Mr. Lim wishes to conduct a recording. So we really need the strength.

Also, pls do be considerate enough to let us know of your attendance, whether coming or not. Pls do not waste the efforts of my committee members who used up their time and money in smsing you or posting here. I really believe they are not obliged to do so, especially to inform one entire batch of people for EVERY SATURDAY. hey Hi all,

1) There will be no practice on coming Saturday, but the band room will be open. Can come down to self-practise. But committee members, pls do up your area of work for the post concert report! Unfortunately (haha), there will be a meeting on Saturday at 10am, since there's no practice. Better to rush this out, before we end up forgetting what happened during the concert for our areas.

2) POST CONCERT CELEBRATION

The post concert celebration will be held on 20th April, SUNDAY, different from the earlier proposed day of Saturday. Reason for this: The function room has been booked on those dates.

Hi everybody, some good news to share with everyone:

1) From the principal herself: The alumni has been given the green light to collect the band room keys ourselves on saturday, as long as we give ample time and notice to the school on when we want to come back. This marks a big move ahead for us because of the trust that the school has placed in us. Furthermore, a good thing for us that the principal is supportive.

2) After the concert last friday, the main band has received a invitation by Central CDC (Community Development Council) See more abt them here. As of now, we are looking at 6 invited and paid performances in public places, including AMK Central, Toa Payoh, Far East etc.

Mr. Lim wants the alumni band to be involved and take a few of these places as well. Similarly, a good chance to expose our band and raise our publicity. Will spread more details of these soon, after we confirm!

There will be an alumni practice on coming saturday, 120408 at 9am.

The alumni band will be running through some pieces and will do the audio recording if we clear these pieces. Please come! =)

Also, michelle has lost a silver-coloured tie during the concert. If anybody has seen an extra one lying around when we were clearing up in VCH, and helped bring it back to school, kindly let her know!

Thank you everyone for helping, must admit i yelled quite a bit. Hehs.
But overall, everyone really coordinated well, adjusting to changes here and there.

Gosh, its after twelve... So its one more day to concert.

Have this msg to the exco:
I know it's been hard for us these few days. Having mutual updating sessions, last minute changes, meetings, coordinating and confirmation.
It's really not easy i know.
But seeing how everyone is concerned about this concert, and wanting to make it the best.. I'm sure its all worthwhile.

So most impt thing now, is.. DONT GAN CHIONG.
As of last Friday, everything that can be desseminated down, job allocation and anything that can be done/thought of has been done/thought of.
Let's just do it to our best.

Really appreciate everyone's help.

For performers not in exco, the least you can help too is to turn up asap on friday, bringing all your tix studs, money and $4 for the video thingy.

Let's all look forward to this concert which i believe its going to be a good one..

Hi all, may not seem much to everybody but but but its 4 days to concert. Let's all look forward to it!!

And to all the leaders/exco members who have been stressed every single day of this week since last week, rushing out namelists, program booklets, ticket collecting, setting timings, doing last minute preparation work...esp amanda and sikai! who have been squeezed badly by me..

Really quite happy to see everybody working together, with the main band as well! Feels like a big family. Ha..

In any case, on concert day, there will be a videographer and photographers around. So for the hire of these services, we regret to say that we need to collect another $4 for this.

Its amb and our first time at VCH, hope to have this memory recorded down as well.

Saturday is officially the last practice before the concert. Details:

PLS PLS come for this last practice. Let's just put in our effort for this last stretch. After all, we've worked so hard for months already. For the sake of everybody, just come on time, take the prac seriously and go for it! Practice will be in the hall, full run of all the pieces.

Hi all, as of yesterday, we have discussed the following issues:

1. Monday 100308

There will be a music exchange with several primary schools, hosted by our main band. There is a request here for those who can make it to help out. Meeting time will be at 1300hrs, in Anderson Sec.

2. Alumni Band practice 130308

The main band will be having their band camp in preparation for the concert. The camp is on the 13th Mar, Thursday and ends on the 14th Mar, Friday. 2D/1N.
There will be a combined practice for the alumni on the night of 13th Mar, at 7pm. Please try your very best to turn up as this will be one of the rare chances that we'll get to practise with the main band for our piece 'Tomorrow'.
A sms will be sent reminding u on tue or wed again. Please do not be late.

3. QM Matters

Any accessories that u all need, pls contact Craig. So that we can make an inventory of items to bring. For e.g. reeds and TUNERS! if u intend to tune using your ears. lol

4. Ticketing Matters

As polled, please ensure you sell the number of tickets that you have given us. This to ensure the number of tickets that the alumni is confident is selling. I know its hard so we'll just have to try harder =)

Please listen to the recording of Jap Graf 9 by yuhua alumni below. I took some time to do this so pls pls the least everybody can do is to look through at least once:

There are both good and bad points in this recording. Learn from others' mistakes/good points and do our best in improving.

One main prob of the band now: Tuning.

Once u know u are out of tune or your friend is VERY out of tune, pls at least bother to tell them or solve the problem. Dont say you don't know whether you are flat or sharp. If you really duno, just try both and see which one is correct la! haha...

Because there will surely be some parts that are more prone to intonation probs, solve them NOW when u still can. And if people tell you you're of tune or whatever, just take it positively. After all, everyone wants the best for the performance. IF it is the instrument's prob, tell us! tell the QM! tell the exco! So that whatever can be done, CAN be done. Dont wait anymore, its the last 2+ weeks already!!!

But in any case, thanks everybody for the hard work. =)

Have few things to be discussed here. Gg to be a long post... Pls ensure u read through! =)

1) Seating Arrangement of the Band
As all those who turned up for yesterday's practice, the balance of the band was damn off. As in most of the sound was just very noisy. This was due to mainly two reasons:

Blasting was carried out by most of us, forgetting balance. Must understand that we need to play soft first, get the balance right, listen to each other.. AND NOT to ensure that you stand out and can be heard! Balance doesnt work that way! Listen downwards, get the tuning balance correct and work within your limits. Dont just blast when the music gets dramatic! Let's work on this.

Seating Arrangement. This has been neglected for sometime and i must apologise for this. Reason for this: I actually hoped to get the more confirmed list of players before doing the seating out. In any case, i have come up with the following, subject to changes after i hear the sound on coming saturday again.

2) QM Matters

As of next week, I need to get the list of instruments that u all are using. And whether there is a main band user for it. The rationale: Most of us will be meeting at VCH on the concert day itself. Thus, if the instrument that you are using does not have a main band user, we need to bring the instrument ourselves, because main band wouldnt know you were using this instrument that they DIDNT USE.
As mentioned, i will be printing out a list of instruments for every section. So that next week when you draw your instrument from the store, you will fill up the instrument u are using accordingly.

3) Concert Attire

For males:

Black black long sleeve, either silver tie (more professional cause its at VCH) or colourful ties (if we were to go more informal)

For females:

Choice 1: Black pants, black long sleeves/ 3/4 sleeves + scarf on neck
Choice 2: Black pants, black long sleeves/ 3/4 sleeves + individual section identity (eg, headband, scarf n other accessories)
Choice 3: Same as guys, black black long sleeve/ 3/4 sleeves +either silver tie (more professional cause its at VCH) or colourful ties (if we were to go more informal)

Pls vote accordingly! This issue will be under Amanda's concern.

4) Ticketing

Please please please push for the ticket sales. 1+ month to concert only! As mentioned before, everybody is encouraged to make use of the official advert that is the top most post in this blog. After all, that was the objective of it. For easy posting, convenience to details and all. If you have friends in other bands, pls post it there as well!

5) Practice on 1st March 2008

The next practice is on the 1st Mar. For woodwinds, pls come at 9am sharp for sectionals! For brasses, pls come at 10am. But brasses are encouraged to come too at 9am. Esp the weaker sections that need practice. Wont mention which haha. =P

Things to take note:
Because this year the concert is at VCH, the rules and regulations state that ALL ticket studs will need to be sent to VCH manpower for checking within 7 days of the concert. This includes the audited statement and accounts. This will affect on the amount to be paid for rental of the concert hall. So pls pls pls take care of the tickets! Thank you very much!

Hi,
Firstly, would like to wish all members a belated merry xmas and an upcoming happy new year ahead! =)
Hope everybody has been well. Ok, now on to the main thing:

There will be a concert by the Kashiwa Municipal High School Symphonic Band. Strongly recommended.
They are actually a very good band, 200 strong band in Japan which has won numerous awards.
Mr. yea has strongly recommended this concert to the main band and has thus bought 50 tickets at an early bird discount of $29. However, as less than 50 of the main band members are going, there are only SEVEN tickets leftover. Please consider going for this concert as this is a rare opportunity to listen to them.

Kashiwa Municipal High School Symphonic Band, led by Mr Shuichi Ishida, attained the top band recognition in Japan. The band popularity draws crowds over 100 000 at its annual concert. It has won many accolades including the Gold Award at the All-Japan Band Competition, Excellence Award at the All-Japan Marching Band Festival, General Grand Prize at the All-Japan High School Wind Band Conference and the Golden award at the All-Japan High School Invitation Wind Band Conference.

The band has adopted 'shamisen' ( a traditional Japanese guitar with only three strings ), Chinese instruments and enjoyable perforamnce that include singing and dancing. These preformances are intended to showcase a global flavour and impressive saging.

Repertoire: To be confirmed.
Personally, I feel that this concert will not be as heavy; one that i should expect filled with gimmicks, dancing and all. Good chance to learn from them, and possibly to incorporate some elements into my upcoming concert.

FYI. I wouldnt be coming on the 22nd Dec alumni prac as I will be on overseas leave. Have already met the other leaders last Sat to brief them on everything, so should be alright. Enjoy the practice!

Hi all, the coming alumni prac will be on the 8th Dec 07, from 9-12 in the morning. This is also reflected in the calender above.

We will also be collecting $20 for payment of the following:
1) Photocopying of scores
2) Alumni T-shirt (Budget is currently set at $15)
3) Presents for the conductors during concert

Our treasurer, Gary will be collecting the alumni fund so do be reminded to bring along the money!

The alumni T-shirt design should be out by 8th Dec as well so everybody can take a look then. =)

Hi all,

The purpose of this blog is to provide a platform to allow alumni members greater convenience in checking events esp practice dates. The calender at the top will be updated often and members will be able to check the latest arrangement of practices or whatsoever. Whenever possible, we strive to provide the latest updates here.

At the same time, members are very welcome to reflect any problems, questions or comments for decisions/events.
